how do I use my barometer on my suunto watch?

how does it work?

The barometric function of your watch simply measures the atmospheric pressure. It can be used in two different ways, a) a barometer and b) an altimeter. But there is a problem.

The average pressure at sea level on earth is 1013,25 hPa (or 29.9 Mg In if you are American). If you use your watch to check the atmospheric pressure and know if it is a high pressure (sunny weather) or low (rain and wind) then you must first adjust your watch to your elevation above the sea. And if you want to use it to know your elevation, you need to know the atmospheric pressure.

In aviation, the atmospheric pressure at sea level is called QNH. Prior to fly, you adjust your altimeter for QNH, which is a pressure. You then read your elevation above the sea level. If you know your elevation because the airfield has a known elevation, then you adjust it to read the pressure.

It is the same with your watch.

If you don't know your elevation or pressure, you may google the ICAO code of a nearby airfield together with the keyword METAR and you'll read there the present QNH. If in Europe, it will be something like 998Q and in the US, 29.7Q.

A last note: if flying an airliner don't expect your clock to show you your altitude because you are in a pressurized cabin; the pressure is adjusted to perhaps 3 to 6,000 ft above sea level.
